Valley of Flowers FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

The Valley of Flowers officially opens on June 1 and closes on October 30 of every year.

The valley is beautiful all year, with different colors of nature on display each month.

June: In the month of June, you get to see the Green Valley with few flowers, huge glaciers on the way, snow-clad peaks with a blue sky, and very minimal rain.

July: In July month, the monsoon begins from mid-July and maximum flowers start to bloom and stay till August end.

August: The month of August has the greatest number of flowers of all varieties and colors. There are always chances of rainfall, so carry a good pair of shoes and a poncho or raincoat.

September: This is the best time to see Bhrama Kamal (scientific name Saussurea obvallata), the state flower of our state of Uttarakhand. You will find these on the way to Hemkund Sahib, and this is the last month to witness flowers as the flowering starts to decrease due to their short life span. But the weather stays clear, with a blue sky and snow-clad peaks.

October: The valley begins to change color, from lush green to a yellowish brown, and this is when there are the fewest visitors and the most peace. This is the most underrated month to see the beautiful valley.

The trek progresses from easy to moderate with increasing gradient and altitude from Pulna to Ghangaria and from Ghangaria to the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. Given that this is an adventure trek, one should get into the habit of taking daily 5-kilometer walks at least one month before the trek date.If you feel that the trek is difficult, you can always hire a pony or palki to complete it.
Fitness is essential for both the Valley and Hemkund treks, so make it a habit to exercise every day.

There is no such age limit for this trek, as long as you are fit and capable. The minimally advisable age is 4 and the maximum is 70.

The options are mules, palki, porter, and helicopter.
Estimated fares:
Mules: Rs. 2000
Palki: Rs. 10000
Porter: 3000
Helicopter: 3500

Only JIO and Airtel networks are available.

The last ATM is available at Joshimath or Badrinath (you cannot totally rely on this).
Only cash is accepted at Ghangaria, so carry sufficient cash as it runs out so easily here.

There are no pre-reservations required for the trek; you’ll get your entry ticket right at the checkpoint, about 300 meters from the hotel.

Note: The prices are Rs. 150 (for Indians) and Rs. 600 (for foreigners).
